Misamis Institute of Technology, Inc. (MIT), a non-sectarian learning institution, is committed to humanitarian service based on democratic ideals for the development of a whole person through humane education and wholesome teaching-learning activities in order to love, preserve and enrich the Filipino cultural heritage for our national identity.
Brief Historical Sketch
The Misamis Institute of Technology was founded as the Misamis Technical School on November 4, 1965. Its founders, Engr. Leonardo Maglasang and Mrs. Adela Abadies Maglasang, discovered the need for vocational, technological, and maritime education in this part of the country and marshalled their resources to fulfill this need.
Classes were initially hald in a residential unit in Pingol Street, where seventeen students pursued courses in practical electricity and radio mechanics. Despite its humble beginnings, the Misamis Technical School attained public acceptance and recognition. In the first five years of its existence, the school won three prestigious awards during the National Science Development Board contests in the field of science and technology.
In 1970, the Misamis Technical School became the Misamis Technical Institute, with new course offerings to respond to the needs of the community which is served. With the need for more space and and facilities for the growing institution, the founders acquired a 7,000 square meter and in Banadero where buildings were constructed to house the administrative offices and the library.
On January 31, 1977, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS) issued the application for change of name from MTI to the Misamis Institute of Technology. More baccalaureate courses such as Engineering, Customs Administration, Industrial Education, Commerce and Mass Communication were offered.
In 1987, the Misamis Institute of Technology established a television station - the first in Ozamiz City - known as Radio Television Network, Inc. Initially, it was an affiliate of GMA 7 in Manila and presently of ABS-CBN 2. The station serves the provinces of Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Misamis Occidental and some coastal towns in Misamis Occidental. Another television station, DXLM Channel 9 was later installed in Pagadian City.
In 1990, on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee, MIT was recognized for its proficiency in maritime education by being chosen as one of the four institution in the Philippines to train scholars sponsored by the FILNOR-MARIS Foundation, Inc. In the same year, the DXLM-FM station at 97.5 MHz was established in Ozamiz City. Thses stations serve the communication and entertainment needs of the public and mire especially as practicum centers of the Mass Communication Department of MIT.
Presently, MIT has two campuses with 4,000 students, 90 faculty and staff in thirty two different course offerings. MIT holds the distinction of having the only accredited Maritime Training Center in this part of Mindanao. With approximately 4,000 students, the Maritime Training Center of MIT provides practical training on actual seamanship procedures on Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The trainees are exposed to maritime upgrading courses such as Survival Craft, Personal Survival Techniques, First Aid at Sea, Firefighting, Maritime Leadership and Behavior Development, which make use of modern and sophisticated equipment and facilities.They have been organized intro group known as the GLOBANS.
The maritime students received the best practicum opportunities through the MIT Training Ship with 548 Gross Tonnage for 50 students sailing through the cities of Iligan, Cagayan, Cebu, Dumaguete, Dipolog, and Ozamiz. The ship has three classrooms with complete navigation, seamanship, and meteorological instruments.
MIT is presently working toward streamlining of its organization and the alignment of its curricula and human resources to be able to serve its prospective students better. The school aims to provides quality education for the students of the twenty-first century.
